Last weekend made a great impression on me. I visited Warsaw, the capital of Poland, to spend time with friends, pamper my tastebuds, and immerse myself in art.

Last weekend made a great impression on me. I visited Warsaw, the capital of Poland, to spend time with friends, pamper my tastebuds, and immerse myself in art.
Jednym z miejsc, które zawarłam w swoich planach, było Muzeum Narodowe. Do odwiedzin skusił mnie pokaz o intrygująco brzmiącej nazwie - "Spragnieni piękna", dzięki któremu mogłam odbyć inspirującą podróż w czasie. Dwudziestolecie międzywojenne charakteryzowało się dużą różnorodnością. Przeżywające rozkwit kierunki takie jak kubizm, surrealizm, czy dadaizm odrzucały tradycyjne podejście do sztuki, dając artystom duże pole do popisu. Otwarcie się na masowych odbiorców oraz duża swoboda doprowadziły do powstania arcydzieł, obok których ciężko przejść obojętnie.

One of the places I simply had to see was the National Museum. I was tempted to take in an intriguingly-titled exhibition called 'Desire of Beauty' so that I could take an inspirational journey through time. In Poland, the period between the two world wars was characterised by great diversity. Growing trends such as Cubism, Surrealism and Dadaism took over from the more traditional approach to art, opening up all manner of new possibilities to artists. And throwing their work open to a such a big audience and working with much more freedom led to the production of more masterpieces, work which it was difficult to have a neutral opinion of.

Pokaz zainteresuje również miłośników mody, którzy będą mieli możliwość zobaczenia sukien oraz dodatków pochodzących z tamtego okresu. Na początku lat 20. popularnością cieszyły się proste fasony z obniżonym stanem oraz płaskie obuwie. Luźne, nie krępujące ruchów tkaniny niemal w ogóle nie podkreślały "wypukłości," przez co kobiety przypominały płaskie, pozbawione kształtów chłopczyce. Moda lat 30. przestała ignorować kobiecość. Kolorowe ubrania eksponowały biodra, talię oraz ramiona, a wyemancypowane przedstawicielki płci pięknej chętnie pokazywały stopy oraz łydki.

The exhibition will also be of interest to fashion lovers, with visitors able to glimpse dresses and accessories from bygone days. At the beginning of the 1920s, simple, shapeless dress styles were popular, worn with flat shoes. Loose fabric rendered women devoid of a figure, the flat style of dresses offering no cut around the breasts and the hips, resulting in a somewhat unflattering tomboy effect. But fashion a decade later, in the 1930s, no longer ignored femininity. Colourful clothes exposed the waist and shoulders as liberated females showed off their feet and their calves.

Szczególne wrażenie zrobiły na mnie fantazyjny obraz Edwarda Okunia oraz zmysłowy "Portret Poli Negri" stworzony przez Tadeusza Stykę. Urzekła mnie również rzeźba Miki Mickun, przedstawiająca siedzącą kobietę, która wraz ze zmianą perspektywy, nabierała dla mnie zupełnie nowego wyrazu.

What especially impressed me was a fancy work by Polish art nouveau painter Edward Okun and the sensual 'Portrait of Pola Negri' created by Tadeusz Styka. I was also charmed and enchanted by a sculpture by Mika Mickun depicting a seated woman.

Piątkowy wieczór spędziłam w jednej z księgarni, w której odbyło się spotkanie z twórcami dwóch publikacji poświęconych stolicy. Autorem jednej z nich jest mój przyjaciel Kordian, który w swojej książce "Niezwykli patroni ulic Warszawy" podjął próbę nakreślenia sylwetek wielu ważnych postaci, których nazwiska zerkają na nas z tabliczek mijanych podczas przemierzania warszawskich ulic. Wielu z nas przechodzi obok nich obojętnie, ale dzięki fascynującej lekturze upamiętnione na nich personalia nareszcie przestaną być dla nas tylko bezdusznym ciągiem liter. Pięknie wydana, napisana zgrabnym, przystępnym językiem pozycja powinna znaleźć się na półce każdego miłośnika historii :)

One of the authors is my friend Kordian, who through his book 'Extraordinary Patrons Streets of Warsaw' guides readers around the many plaques which adorn buildings on the streets of Warsaw which indicate the important and famous people who once lived there. Without Kordian's help, many of the plaques would doubtless go unnoticed as people pass by going about their busy lives. And thanks to fascinating descriptions about the occupiers of the various houses and buildings, their personal details and their stories are no longer merely a string of soulless letters etched on the plaques. Beautifully delivered, written in interesting, easy-to-read language, Kordian's book should be on the shelf of every lover of history :)

Beautifully delivered, written in interesting, easy-to-read language, Kordian's book should be on the shelf of every lover of history :)
